PATENTE UND NEUE GENTECHNIK:
DIE ZUKUNFT UNSERES SAATGUTS NICHT AUFS SPIEL SETZEN!
Am Donnerstag, 6. Juli 2023 fand im Europäisches Parlament die gemeinsame Veranstaltung der MdEPs Martin Häusling, Sarah Wiener, Thomas Waitz, Benoit Biteau & No Patents on Seeds statt.

Einladungstext:
Die landwirtschaftliche Biotechnologie-Industrie betreibt eine intensive Lobbyarbeit, um Pflanzen, die mit der sog. "neuen Gentechnik" erzeugt wurden, von der EU-GMO-Verordnung auszuschließen, die die Rückverfolgbarkeit und die Kennzeichnung dieser Produkte für den Verbraucher vorschreibt. Die Industrie meldet immer mehr Patente für solche Pflanzen an. Gleichzeitig arbeitet sie daran, den Geltungsbereich von Patenten auf konventionell gezüchtete Pflanzen auszuweiten.
Wenn diese Bemühungen der Industrie erfolgreich sind, wird es in der EU zu einer Flut von patentiertem Saatgut kommen, die sowohl gentechnisch verändertes als auch konventionelles Saatgut umfasst. Dies hätte schwerwiegende Folgen für Züchter, Landwirte, Lebensmittelhersteller und Verbraucher. Unsere Konferenz wird neue Informationen über die jüngsten Patentanmeldungen liefern und die möglichen Auswirkungen von patentiertem Saatgut auf die Pflanzenzucht, die Landwirtschaft und die Verbraucher in der EU analysieren und diskutieren.

This event is co-hosted by Green/EFA MEPs Martin Häusling, Sarah Wiener, Thomas Waitz and Benoit Biteau together with No Patents on Seeds.

The agricultural biotechnology industry is lobbying hard to exclude plants derived from ‘new genomic techniques’ from the EU's GMO law, which requires traceability and consumer labelling of these products. The industry is filing more and more patent applications for such plants. At the same time, it is also working to expand the scope of patents to conventionally bred plants.

If these efforts are successful, the EU will see a surge of patented seeds, including both genetically engineered and conventional seeds. This would have severe consequences for breeders, farmers, food producers and consumers. Our conference will provide new information on recent patent applications and discuss the potential impacts of patented seeds on EU plant breeding, farming and consumers.
